The global fast-food chain has pulled a Christmas advert made using Artificial Intelligence after encountering significant criticism on social media.

The short spot was developed via generative AI clips and was first uploaded on the YouTube channel for the Dutch branch of McDonald's back on 6 December.

Viewer Reaction and Decision to Pull

Following its publication, audiences online lambasted the implementation of AI in the advert. A number of labeled it "creepy" and "poorly edited".

"This moment serves as an key lesson as we explore the proper application of Artificial Intelligence," stated a statement from McDonald's Netherlands.

The advert was produced for McDonald's by Dutch company TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It depicted various scenarios that can go wrong during the festive season, with the theme "not the most wonderful time of the year".

A Growing Trend of AI Commercials

Adverts that incorporate generative AI have emerged as a increasing trend among major corporations, especially for the holiday season.

  • Coca-Cola has also released back-to-back AI-generated Christmas commercials.
  • Technical Challenges: As clips created with current AI video tools are more likely to degrade the longer they run, the majority of such clips tend to be roughly a few seconds in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The ad also raised concerns about job displacement in the creative sector, with some commenters noting it might affect work for actors.

Response from the Creators

Following the commercial being pulled, a producer's head, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the advert.

She stated, the creation took "seven weeks" and involved creating "thousands of takes" which were then edited in post-production "just as we would on any standard production".

"This wasn't an AI gimmick," Bridge asserted. "We consider it a proper commercial."

Divisive Public Reception

While the McDonald's commercial was largely panned, the reception for some AI-assisted campaigns has been more mixed.

For instance, a recent AI-created Christmas spot from Coca-Cola according to analysis received a significant "positive sentiment rating" from the public.

However, other businesses have likewise encountered backlash for employing the technique in marketing. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that some called "low-effort" and "uncanny".

The situation illustrates the evolving debate within the marketing and creative industries about the trade-off between technological innovation and creative integrity.
